Juan Aguilera has spent over two decades photographing the natural world after dark. He's a member of the International Dark Sky Association and National Parks at Night, and he's taught photography workshops across the Pacific Northwest, including at Mount Rainier and the Steens Mountain Wilderness.
On August 13, he's bringing that experience to Calliope Creative for one night only.
This class covers the fundamentals of night sky photography: camera settings for low light, composition under the stars, and how to plan a shoot around the moon and the Milky Way. Whether you've never pointed a camera at the night sky or you're ready to get more technical, you'll leave with the tools to do it well.
Then comes the part we're even more excited about. Straight from class, we're heading to Mongata Winery to put what you learned into practice, photographing the Perseid meteor shower in real time. This optional mini-workshop add-on will likely include a glass of wine and covers event insurance, so final pricing is still being finalized [price TBD].
This class is by donation, with all proceeds supporting the Through the Lens: Mobile Youth Photography Program, bringing hands-on photography education to young people across the Walla Walla Valley.
Anyone with a camera (DSLR, mirrorless, or otherwise) who wants to learn how to shoot the night sky, from total beginners to photographers ready to get serious about astrophotography.
Your camera and lenses, a tripod, and warm layers if you're joining us at Mongata after class. Students will drive themselves, and please consider carpooling as a Thank You to Mother Earth.
