This is the year you stop meaning to learn photography and actually do it.

You bought the camera. Maybe it’s still in the box. Maybe you’ve been shooting on auto and quietly wishing the photos looked like what you actually saw. Either way, this is the January where that changes.

The moments you’re trying to capture aren’t waiting for you to figure it out. Your kids are growing up right now. That trip is already on the calendar. The people you love are getting older, and so are you. And every time something beautiful happens in front of you, your camera hands back something blurry, dark, or nothing like the real thing.

That isn’t a you problem. It’s a knowledge gap, and it’s completely fixable in five Sundays.

Why people take this class:

You want to finally lift that camera out of the drawer and use it like you always imagined. You want to come home from a trip with photos that actually look like the place you stood in, the light you remember, the feeling you had when you were there. You want to stop losing the shot because you were buried in settings while the moment happened without you. You want to photograph your kids the way childhood actually feels, the belly laughs and the sleepy mornings and the way they looked at exactly this age, not the flat version auto mode guesses at. You want something real to hand down, so the people who come after you can see the faces you loved. You want to see the world a little differently, and have the skill to show someone else what you saw.

Every one of those reasons is valid. Every one of them is covered in this course.

This class is for you if you are:

13 years old and curious about everything.
Seventy and finally making time for something that’s been on your list for years.
A parent documenting childhood before it slips away.
A traveler who wants photos worth printing.
A retiree picking up a new skill and a new way of seeing. A grandparent building a visual legacy for the family.
A business owner who knows better images would change everything.
A teenager ready to learn something real.
A creative who has been putting this off forever.

All ages welcome. All skill levels welcome. All camera brands welcome. Complete beginners are genuinely encouraged, not just allowed. If your camera can go into Manual mode, it’s the perfect camera to bring to class.

What we cover over 5 weeks:

Week 1: How your camera sees light, and why auto mode was holding you back.
Week 2: Composition and light, the two things that matter most.
Week 3: Light and landscapes, learning to read any environment.
Week 4: HDR and the basics of editing, taking your images from good to finished.
Week 5: People, food, and still life, putting everything into practice on the subjects that matter most to you.

Every class ends with hands-on shooting, in the studio or out on a photo walk through downtown Walla Walla. Reading about photography and actually doing it are two different things, and this hands-on class is exactly what you’ve been waiting for.

By the time we finish, you will:

Shoot confidently in full manual mode. Understand aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and metering without looking anything up. Come home from your next trip with photos you actually want to print. Photograph your family the way they really look and feel. Compose with intention instead of hope. Read light in any situation. And walk away from every shoot proud of what you made.

One more thing worth knowing.

Every ticketed class at Calliope Creative includes a scholarship seat reserved for someone who needs it, because the ability to preserve your own memories shouldn’t depend on what’s in your bank account right now. If that’s you or someone you know, reach out. The door is genuinely open.

8 spots. 5 Sundays. A new year that actually moves you forward.
